The most important task for us is to pass on to our children a thorough knowledge of scripture and biblical truths. If they excel and become outstanding doctors, lawyers or businessmen but don't know the Lord, it is all meaningless. I was blessed to be raised in a Christian home in which Scripture or a Children's Bible story book was read after each meal. After breakfast my mother would read from a children's story Bible. My parents took great care to use one they felt was true to Scripture and did not contain a lot of fantasizing. After supper my father would read from Scripture. We would work through the Bible fairly systematically so we were exposed to all of it many times before we left our parental home. I attribute my fairly good Bible knowledge to this practice and we have used the same practice with our own children. It is not enough for our children to just know a few Bible verses or to occasionally read a story. They need to know the Bible well if they are to withstand the onslaught of the evil one in these dark times. We do well to remember the refrain which is found both in the Old and New Testaments, "My people are lost for a lack of knowledge". Let it not be said of us that we failed in this most important of all areas. I encourage you to develop a healthy habit of reading and studying scripture together as a family.
